Hello friends of the creek!
We hope that your new year is off to a great start. It has been a while since we’ve sent out a newsletter, so we thought we should check in with some updates from our organization to you.
Appalachian Voices
Our third annual Appalachian Voices is on February 24th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Arthurdale Heritage Center Hall, 18 Q Rd, Arthurdale, WV 26520. Come out to explore our region’s culture, heritage, and connection to the natural world through live poetry, prose, music, and storytelling from local Appalachian artists. Updated membership tiers
Do you want to support Friends of Deckers Creek and all of the work that we do? Consider becoming a member. We’ve updated our membership model with four personal tiers and three business tiers to choose from. Memberships remain active for one year from your date of donation and can be auto-renewed monthly or annually. Visit deckerscreek.org/membership to learn more.
Open positions on our Board of Directors
Are you interested in getting involved with Friends of Deckers Creek? We have several open positions on our Board of Directors. Our board members assist our organization with managing our internal affairs, developing programs and policies in line with our mission, volunteering at events, and more. Board members serve two year terms and can renew for a maximum of three consecutive terms. Board meetings are typically held every other month on the third Wednesday. Our next board meeting is on Wednesday, March 20th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at our office on 205 Parsons St, Morgantown, WV 26505. Click here to complete our board member interest form.
Marilla Gully Sedimentation Remediation Plan
We have chosen an engineering firm to assist us in remediating a heavily eroded gully in Marilla Park. This project, funded by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) Nonpoint Source Program, will stabilize the banks of a flashy intermittent stream, reduce erosion and stormwater runoff, create additional habitat through its natural stream design, and cause a significant decrease in the amount of sedimentation in Deckers Creek. Construction will begin later this year.
Annual State of the Creek Report
Our annual State of the Creek report recapping 2023 is undergoing its final edits and should be released within the next month. Be sure to follow us on social media to be the first to hear when it drops. You can catch up on all of our previous reports at deckerscreek.org/sotc.
Morgantown Riverfront Assessment
The Morgantown Riverfront Revitalization Task Force is seeking input from community members and stakeholders in the development of a 10-year Master Plan for the Morgantown Riverfront. Click here to complete the survey by February 1st.
